Roofing Industry Family Comes Together for a Deserving Disabled, Senior and Veteran in Lakewood

The Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) provided an amazing new roof to help deliver a safe and healthy home for an honorable disabled senior Veteran in Lakewood, in partnership with Rebuilding Together South Sound on April 12, 2023.

RCAW annually operates the Basic Shelter Project, where they help repair damaged and leaking roofs for families in need in Washington State. All costs, materials, and labor was donated by RCAW members to make this house a secure and strong home again for a disabled Veteran in Lakewood who reached out to Rebuilding Together South Sound,. As partners with RCAW, Rebuilding Together South Sound, provided the information to help repair his damaged roof.  RCAW immediately did a call to action to their membership, and instantly joined forces with generous roofing community members who were willing to donate their time, materials, and money to help this honorable Veteran feel secure under a new protected roof. On February 16, 2023, RCAW jointly met with Rebuilding Together South Sound, Lakewood Roofing and GAF who graciously visited his home to do an initial site check and meet this amazing Veteran and his daughter personally who were delighted to have this work done.

April 12th  RCAW members, Christian Flores, with Lakewood Roofing, cordially donated all the labor for full and complete tear-off and re-roof, as well as Donovan Gladstone with GAF, North America’s Largest Roofing manufacturing company is donating the roofing materials package.  Also contributing to this project is: Travis Young with  Tru Colors Contracting for the TPO,  Justin Shirley, State Roofing  helped with the dump trailer/recycling and Colin Madsen, Madsen Roofing contributed sheeting and plywood. Joshua Wilson with Stoneway Roofing Supply is our chosen distributor who helped with anything extra needed to complete this home. The Veteran is beyond thankful for everyone who donated to help him continue to live his best life in his family home. RCAW is looking forward to working with Rebuilding Together South Sound in 2024 to continue to make a difference is someone’s life.

“Knowing recent times have been tough for the roofing industry. I am very proud to be a part of an association, like RCAW, whose members continue to promptly join forces together, to help Washington State families in need. This is a positive story that needs to be shared with others.”  said Justin Shirley, 2022-2023 RCAW President.

RCAW's Basic Shelter

RCAW’S BASIC SHELTER PROJECT IS COMPLETED WITH HELP FROM ROOFING PROFESSIONALS

August 17, 2022, the Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW)’s Basic Shelter Project 2022 joined forces with RCAW members, Legends Roofing, GAF, Achtens Quality Roofing, All Ply Roofing, LLC, Madsen Roofing, Esary Roofing & Siding, Guardian Roofing, Axis Roof & Gutter, Minihan & Sons, LLC and Convoy Supply, Inc., to repair the damaged roof and chimney of the Lopez family in Federal Way. Working together each company listed above provided all the scheduling, preparing, and triple checking of items needed for this project.

“All the roofing contractors who donated their time, money and labor deserve tremendous kudos for their generosity to help the Lopez family, and community. Seeing the Legends crew all safely working together as a team on such a nice day was remarkable. Also, watching Mr. Lopez’s face light up when his daughter told him that all the hard work was free, made me understand even more, why we do kind things for others. He smiled very big and thanked everyone multiple times for their graciousness and kindness.,” said Amanda Fields, Executive Director Alfredo and Bris Lopez did not tell their father that the work being done on the house was free, until yesterday. Once Mr. Lopez came home from work and saw the Legends crew finishing up his roof, his daughter then gave him the great news. He was delighted, overjoyed, and thanked everyone there. The Lopez family purchased their home a year ago, not aware of the damage that their roof and chimney were in.

Alfredo and Bris, the two children of the homeowners, were very concerned about how their aging parents were going to fix and pay for the repairs so they reached out to RCAW’s Basic Shelter program for help. RCAW immediately did a call for help to their membership and again, Legends Roofing, GAF, Achtens Quality Roofing, All Ply Roofing, LLC, Madsen Roofing, Esary Roofing & Siding, Guardian Roofing, Axis Roof & Gutter, Minihan & Sons, LLC and Convoy Supply, Inc. all generously agreed to support the family. Finally, their house is now a comfortable, safe home for their family

On June 23, 2021, the Roofing Contractors Association of Washington joined forces with members State Roofing, Malarkey Roofing Products, Madsen Roofing Company, Achten’s Quality Roofing, Esary Roofing & Siding Co, Preferred Roof Services, Convoy Supply, and EagleView to provide a new roof to Nick L. of Everett. Jeannie from Otter Insurance received a call from Nick’s neighbor Rudy hoping that the Insurance Agency could help. Nick’s roof was leaking, and the forecast was calling for high winds and rain. Senior Services had come out previously and nailed a tarp down. However, the winds on that Friday ripped the old tarp off and the roof was exposed to the weather once again. Rudy was informed that insurance would not cover the roof as it was a wear and tear/maintenance issue, and insurance does not cover that. Nick just celebrated his 88th birthday, and unfortunately has outlived all his family and has no money to pay for the repairs himself. Jeannie received a tip about the Basic Shelter Program from Michael as we had helped him with his mother Patricia’s reroof earlier in the year. The RCAW Staff and Board of Directors jumped into action and worked to put labor and materials together to complete this next project together and continue our Basic Shelter Program where we work together with our members to provide a new roof to a deserving party twice per year.

State Roofing, Malarkey Roofing Products, Madsen Roofing Company, Achten’s Quality Roofing, Esary Roofing & Siding Co, Preferred Roof Services, Convoy Supply, and EagleView

Nick’s roof was so bad it took several days to rebuild and reroof. During that time Rudy, Nick’s neighbor called, as Nick’s hot water heater had gone out. The RCAW was able to put Nick into contact with Homage in Snohomish County who was able to get Nick a new hot water heater. We also noticed that Nick’s porch was in dangerous disrepair and are happy to say that we coordinated with Habitat for Humanity Snohomish who is going to be rebuilding Nick’s front porch. There is some additional interior work that needs to be done due to the constant leaks in the roof over a long period of time.

If anyone reading this, would like to give of their time and materials to help Nick out in this way, please contact Amanda Fields at the RCAW office at 253-561-7229. Nick is a Korean War veteran and a very sweet man, and we are honored to have been able to help him out and cannot thank the members involved in making this happen enough – Nick felt truly blessed

The Roofing Contractors Association of Washington, the leading trade organization for the roofing industry in Washington, has joined forces with its members to create the Basic Shelter Program, a way to give back to our community, in the form of a new roof to a deserving family providing shelter and security to their home.

On July 23-24, 2020 the Roofing Contractors Association of Washington joined forces with members Achten’s Quality Roofing, GAF, Stoneway Roofing Supply, Madsen Roofing, and EagleView to provide a new roof to Patricia Monroe of Burien. had reached out on her behalf in early June stating his mom was in dire need of a new roof, but at 81 with health issues and on a fixed income this was an insurmountable problem for her and their family. without the roof being redone her homeowner’s insurance would be Sadly, cancelled, adding a heightened sense of urgency to the project. The RCAW Board of Directors jumped into action and worked to put labor and materials together to complete this project and further decided to start the Basic Shelter Program where we will work together with our members to provide a new roof to a deserving party twice per year.

Ralph Waldo Emerson may have said it best when he stated

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have made a difference that you have lived and lived it well.”

The Roofing Contractors Association of Washington has risen to that sentiment and used its platform to make a difference. “Sometimes our industry gets a bad rap,” says Tracey Prociw, Past Executive Director of the RCAW. “But actually, we have incredible people with big hearts that want to give back to their community and this program will give us that opportunity to make a real difference.”

The Basic Shelter Program will be featured here on the RCAW Website in the coming months with a form for nominations, by the general public. Twice per year the RCAW board will choose a deserving family for a new roof.

We want to invite our members to join us!
