On Friday, August 1, 2025, members and non-members of the Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) gathered at the Point Defiance Marina in Tacoma for a day filled with salmon fishing, camaraderie, and friendly competition at the Annual RCAW Salmon Derby, presented by GreenSky, LLC. From dawn until 2:00PM, the docks and waters buzzed with excitement as anglers of all experience levels set out to reel in the biggest catch.
The morning kicked off with check-in at the marina, which was plastered with generous Derby Sponsor Banners a, where participants picked up derby rules, purchased raffle tickets, grabbed their gear, and set out on the Puget Sound. With rods in hand and boats ready, the race was on to see who could bring in the heaviest salmon of the day. The weather held up, spirits were high, and plenty of great catches came in to be weighed.
The Derby did not disappoint, as anglers brought back impressive fish to the scales. Winners were recognized in several categories, with prizes awarded for the heaviest overall salmon. Congratulations to this year’s champions:
- 1st Place – $1,000 Winner | Dean Schuster, GCI, LLC Roofing – 16.44lbs
- 2nd Place – $750 Winner | Bob Hardy, Legends Roofing – 14.61lbs
- 3rd Place – $500 Winner | Orik Buri, GAF – 13.44lbs
- All Fish Raffle – $300 Winner | Bob Hardy, Legends Roofing
- Photo of the Day – $100 Winner | Dean Schuster, GCI, LLC Roofing
Each winner walked away with bragging rights, prizes, and the satisfaction of being among the top anglers in RCAW’s fishing community.
While the competition was the peak, the Salmon Derby was also about building connections and enjoying the outdoors together. Families, crews, and colleagues joined in the fun—whether they were out on the boats, casting from the shore, or cheering on the weigh-ins at the marina. Participants also enjoyed time together after the lines were reeled in, dancing to the live Billy Shew Band, with delicious variety of hotdogs from Starvin’ Marvin food truck, drinks, and good conversation as the winners were announced.

The RCAW Salmon Derby has become a cherished annual tradition for members and their families. It’s more than just a fishing contest—it’s an opportunity to relax, share stories, and celebrate the spirit of community that makes RCAW strong.
We are looking at two dates for next year’s derby and want to know your preference, either Friday, July 31st or Friday, September 11th. Please let Amanda Fields ( (253) 561-7229 or Director@RCAW.com) know your preference by September 15th so we can get it on the 2026 RCAW calendar. Either date we choose, we know next year’s Salmon Derby promises even more fun, bigger catches, and another chance to be the RCAW Salmon Derby winner. 2025 RCAW Salmon Derby was a true catch of the day—thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored, and helped make this event possible!
