4 Back-to-school Tips that Prioritize Health for the Whole Family

Forge a path toward better health.

A new season offers a chance to check in with ourselves and rebalance our lifestyles. With kids now headed back to school, the transition from summer to fall is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved in prioritizing wellness.

The CleanTech Alliance Health Trust – an employee benefits plan available through RCAW’s reciprocal relationship with the CleanTech Alliance – wants to help you and your family forge a path toward better health with these four back-to-school tips:

1 – Eat well: Harvest season is upon us, so take full advantage of the season’s bounty by stocking up on fresh produce. MyPlate.gov recommends that you fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Remember to keep that ratio in mind when you’re planning your own and your child’s snacks.

2 – Get moving: Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. The CDC recommends at least 60 minutes of exercise each day for kids ages 6 to 17; adults should strive for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity each week. Make exercise part of family fun with aerobic activities like playing soccer and riding bikes as well as climbing and push-ups to help build muscle strength.

3 – Get enough sleep: Try “unplugging” as a family at least one hour before bed every night. Insufficient sleep can lead to decreased performance and increase the risk of developing serious health conditions like diabetes, obesity and depression. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends nine to 12 hours a night for children ages 6 to 12; teens need nine to 10 hours. Adults should sleep seven or more hours per night on a regular basis to promote optimal health.

4 – Schedule a well-child visit: Be proactive about your health to catch potential health issues while they’re easier to treat. Premera Blue Cross, which provides medical coverage through the CleanTech Alliance Health Trust, covers annual well-child visits and other in-network preventive services at 100 percent. With flu season right around the corner, it’s also a great time to schedule routine vaccinations, also covered by the Health Trust.
